Kerry Botched a Joke; Bush Botched a WAR; How Many Will DIE Today Because of Kerry's Mistake?

A surreal and ultimately disgusting facet of the Iraq fiasco is the lag between when a fact becomes obvious and when the fiasco's architects acknowledge that fact. Iraq's civil war has been raging for more than a year; so has the Washington debate about whether it is what it is.
--"Togetherness in Baghdad," George Will, conservative columnist for Newsweek, November 6, 2006.

In point of fact--and it is a sad fact, but a fact nonetheless--America is not winning in Iraq, which means that it is losing. Iraq has fallen apart both as a nation and as a state…America has to see Iraq as it is now, not as it once was. Not as it could have been. Not as we hope it will become.
--"Rethinking Iraq: The Way Forward: The Drawdown Option: It is past time to confront reality. To avoid total defeat, we must reduce and redeploy our troops and nudge the Iraqis toward a deal. Here's how," Fareed Zakaria, foreign affairs columnist for Newsweek, November 6, 2006. Mr. Zakaria supported the war in '03.

The public…is blinded by the president's conjured set of illusions…But reality can no longer be avoided.
--op-ed to the L.A. Times, by General William E. Odom, quoted by Dan Froomkin in the Washington Post, October 31, 2006.

"Bush should be ashamed for the predicament that this nation has been put in."
--33-year old Marine Captain Robert Secher, in an e-mail to his dad from Iraq. Capt. Secher, a staunch Republican, was killed soon after writing home.

I'm so sick of this ridiculous waste of media time over what Kerry said and what Bush said that I could throw up every time I turn on the television.

Whatever Senator Kerry said or did not say, whatever he meant or did not mean, is IRRELEVANT.

DO YOU KNOW, DO YOU CARE?...THAT THE IRAQI PRIME MINISTER ORDERED AMERICAN TROOPS TO WITHDRAW FROM THE DEADLIEST AREA OF BAGHDAD WHERE THE MOST OF THE VIOLENCE THAT HAS GRIPPED THAT CITY HAS ORIGINATED FROM?

DO YOU KNOW, DO YOU CARE?...THAT BY THE PENTAGON'S OWN ESTIMATION, HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF WEAPONS, PAID FOR BY AMERICAN TAX DOLLARS, HAVE DISAPPEARED ONTO IRAQI STREETS AND THERE IS NO WAY TO TRACK THEM BECAUSE THE ARMY DID NOT WRITE DOWN THEIR SERIAL NUMBERS, SO THEY'RE BEING USED AGAINST OUR TROOPS?

DO YOU KNOW, DO YOU CARE?...THAT BY THE PENTAGON'S OWN ESTIMATION, IRAQ HAS DESCENDED INTO UTTER CHAOS?

DO YOU KNOW, DO YOU CARE?...THAT RECENT PENTAGON FIGURES STATE THAT WE WILL HAVE TO REMAIN IN IRAQ FOR ***DECADES*** IN ORDER TO CLEAN UP THE MESS BUSH MADE?

DO YOU KNOW, DO YOU CARE?...THAT YESTERDAY, BUSH SAID HE INTENDS TO KEEP RUMSFELD, THE CHIEF ARCHITECT OF THIS MADNESS, UNTIL THE DAY HE LEAVES OFFICE IN 2009?

And DO YOU KNOW, DO YOU CARE?...that every one of these news stories were in the papers over the past few days, just since the weekend--but not on the evening news or in any of the talk shows or, God forbid, on any Republican sources?

I beg of you, American voter. Please, please do not lose focus when you cast your ballot on Tuesday, November 7.

As President Bush throws himself into the final days of a particularly nasty campaign season, he's settled into a familiar pattern of ugly behavior. Since he can't defend the real world created by his policies and his decisions, Mr. Bush is inventing a fantasy world in which to campaign on phony issues against fake enemies...When the president of the United States gleefully bathes in the muck to divide Americans into those who love their country and those who don't, it is destructive to the fabric of the nation he is supposed to be leading.

--"The Great Divider," editorial, New York Times, November 2, 2006.

It is in the best interest of the very people who started this war and proceeded to utterly botch it up, to draw your attention away to some little media brouhaha THEY created so that you will be hypnotized, yet again, into forgetting HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE DEAD AND MAIMED BECAUSE OF THEM.

Kerry isn't on the ballot and neither is Bush, but I will repeat: Kerry botched a joke. Bush botched a war.

HOW MANY WILL DIE TODAY BECAUSE OF KERRY'S MISTAKE?

HOW MANY WILL DIE TODAY BECAUSE OF BUSH'S MISTAKE?

So he screwed up the joke. OK. Big deal. Under all the fuss we all know that the truth is hard to take. The real truth is simple. No one sends their kids to get a college education and hope they end up in service in Iraq. Yes, some kids go into the service as a means of getting a college education. They are our reservists. The majority of our armed forces however, are made up of lower income, good Americans. How many Senators and Congessmens' sons and daughter are reservists? How many are saying, "when I graduate high school, I want to be a Marine, serve my country, and then I'll go to college". It is hard to talk about being stuck in Iraq. We are stuck in Iraq! There is something not right about itthis whole scenario. So go ahead Republicans, take your shot while you can in the public arena. I'll take my shot at you in the polls this election!

Bravo, anonymous!!

One way the army has been able to make their quotas lately is that they've started to allow in those with minor criminal records and people as old as 42, as well as high school drop-outs.

For the record, my son did enlist in the Marine Corps after he got his degree, as did many idealistic young men and women post-9-11. But the vast marjority of recruits are not, as you point out and CCR identified 30 years ago, "fortunate sons," like, say, our commander-in-chief.
