Part III: "Laura and I Value Our Friendship with You"

After Ken Lay and his company became top supporters of the Bushes--eventually giving $3 million in total to various Bush campaigns and the Republican Party--doors opened for them in a big way…Enron's fortunes soared
.--"Bush Links Energized Enron," Robert Scheer, Truthdig.org, May 30, 2006.

A long paper trail of their friendly and collaborative correspondence has been made public through Freedom of Information Act requests.

Here are the facts, flat-out, as we know them:

*a long list of George H.W. Bush's Cabinet and inner circle went to work for Enron after they left the White House

*a ruling from a Commodities Futures Trading Commission head appointed by No. 41 made it possible for Enron to trade in energy derivatives, which led to its exponential growth

*Ken Lay was a "Bush Pioneer" who sent more than $2 million in Enron funds toward No. 43's presidential campaigns, in $2000 bundles, and also provided the former governor with the Enron jet on at least eight occasions during his first presidential campaign. Taxpayers sprang for the second one.

*When Bush was a governor, he taped birthday greetings to Ken Lay and wrote him dozens of personal notes through their long friendship, referring to "Kenny Boy" Lay as "old friend"

*After Bush Junior took office, Ken Lay made at least six trips to the White House to meet with Dick Cheney, and was part of the secret meeting that then set energy policy for the White House

*Ken Lay recommended George W. Bush's appointment as head of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. Consequently, when Enron spent a solid year jacking around the state of California's energy levels, complete with rolling black-outs during a record heat wave and sky-rocketing bills for California consumers--the FERC sat back and did nothing, no regulating, nothing…thus not only making hundreds of millions of dollars for Enron, but setting up the downfall of Governor Grey Davis, a Democrat, and his replacement by Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger, and halting Davis's plans to run for president against George W. Bush.

After the Enron scandal broke, George W. Bush said, "I have not met him personally."
